We were joined on a rainy 1 October by the artist Melanie Cambridge, who shared her secrets for drawing horses in oil pastels.
Melanie started the evening by sketching a horse’s head, expertly showing us how to get the proportions right before building up the colours and textures.
After the break, Melanie set about drawing a horse and its groom using a sketch she’d done at Fontwell. Unbelievably, this only took her about half an hour to do!
Melanie’s main artistic influences come from working outdoors, with light and colour playing a major role in her work. As well as pastels she uses oils, gouache, mixed media and acrylics and her subjects range from horses, landscapes, beach scenes and coastal views.
