Jonathan Newey 04.02.20

Our demo on Tuesday 4 February 2020 featured artist Jonathan Newey.

An award-winning artist who is inspired by nature, Jonathan’s worked has been selected several times for the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation’s Wildlife Artist of the Year exhibition. However, our demo tonight focused on painting interesting windows and doors in acrylics.

Jonathan has built up a collection of photos of architectural features during his travels, and tonight he used one of a slightly careworn house in Cyprus. Using a canvas board painted with textured ceiling paint, Jonathan started with a wash of dark brown, which he then wiped back with a tissue. This technique added texture, essential for the ‘shabby chic’ look he was aiming for.

He next built up blocks of colour followed by deep, dark shadows to give the impression of sunlight, then highlights. Weathering the door using the side of an old dry brush came next, followed by details like louvres on the window shutters, windows, cracks on the wall, pavement tiles and shadows thrown by flaking paint.

Even though the painting wasn’t finished by the end of the evening you can definitely get a feel of the house, as well as the sunshine and the heat.
